Student Spotlight: Plans after Graduation

Grace Wright, right, poses with other students at graduation.

Congratulations to our recent graduates and upcoming summer graduates. We're so proud of all of you!

Julie Brown graduated magna cum laude with a general engineering degree. In the fall, Julie will be attending UTC and earning a bachelor's in civil engineering. Her last day working at the library was yesterday and we’re all sad to see her go, but super excited about her future college and career plans.

Grace Katherine Wright is graduating in August with an Associate of Science and has a current 4.0 GPA. She is taking two summer classes and then transferring to UTC in the fall to major in Painting and Drawing. Grace won the Excellence in Painting award for the Fine Arts division and is a Global Scholars student.

Grace says, “I'm a people-person, cat-lover, friend-maker. At the library, I'd say the things I've done the best have been customer service, cleaning, and helping with projects in the back (like filling goodie bags as fast as humanly possible).”

We’re so lucky to have some the best and brightest Chattanooga State students working for us. Good luck on your future endeavors, Julie and Grace!

Student Assistant Spotlight: Wrapping Up a Great Semester

Our Student Assistants are one of our greatest assets at Kolwyck Library and Information Commons. They are an essential part of our ChattState team and display excellent customer service and a keen knack for technology troubleshooting.

We'd like to highlight a few of our Student Assistants who really shone on campus this past semester.

Congratulations to Natalie for graduating this semester! Natalie was the epitome of a dedicated student assistant and she will be missed. In addition to her excellent customer service skills, Natalie assisted with detailed projects and training other student assistants. We'll miss you Natalie, but we're so excited to see where life takes you next!

If you've been to Kolwyck Library and Information Commons this semester, then you've probably noticed creative touches like marker boards that look like notebook paper, an Emergency Research Station sign created with tape, or brightly lettered sandwich boards displaying hours and events. That's all courtesy of Ariana. Ariana is always willing to tackle a creative project and is one of our resident artists at Kolwyck. Ariana's creativity isn't limited to visual arts; the picture above is from the Creative Writing Club reading where Ariana shared part of her novella.

Madison is another Student Assistant star! Madison is patient, thorough, and is always willing to help. She's also a super bright student. Madison, pictured here with her fellow project members, was the winner of the fall Student Research Symposium in the Behavioral and Social Sciences Division. Congrats to Madison and the rest of her team!

We cannot wait to see our Student Assistants back behind the service desk next semester. Watch this space for more Student Assistant Spotlight features and have a great winter break!

Student Assistant Spotlight: Ashley

This week, we're highlighting some of the great work that our student assistants do at the library. Be on the lookout for their pictures around the library and blog posts throughout the week to learn a little bit more about them and what they do.

When Ashley isn't working towards her Rad Tech degree, you'll most often find her in the library helping her fellow students. She's been here several semesters, so there's not much patrons can ask to stump her. She's an integral part of the closing crew and we appreciate all of her hard work!

Ashley smiling

1. What's your major? Radiologic Technology

2. What was your last read? Written in My Own Hearts Blood by Diana Gabaldon

3. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Reading, gaming (Xbox & PC), sleeping, watching movies with loved ones and taking walks.

4. What's your favorite color? GREEN :D

5. Where do you see yourself in five years? I’m more focused on what I’m going to be doing today, because no matter what you plan for, it will always change. Ten years ago I saw myself as a composer with a husband and children by the age of 25. Here I am, almost 30, no children, and in a healthcare field. Whatever comes tomorrow is what comes, so I try to enjoy as much of my today as possible.

6. If you had to describe yourself in 3 words, what would they be? “Keep on trying”

7. If you had to choose to live without one of your 5 senses, which one would it be? I would live without my sight – our society is so overly sensitive to the images of everything around us. Models, food, movies, clothing, body image…I’d rather hear the laughter of my loved ones and music and the way the world breathes, instead of the seeing the masks we insist on wearing.
