Not So Frequently Asked Questions with Amanda Roper!

Amanda Roper
Evening and Weekend Librarian
Amanda Roper joined the library staff on November 1st as the Evening and Weekend Librarian and liaison to the Tennessee Reconnect program! You can contact her at amanda.roper@chattanoogastate.edu or at 423.697.2445. But before she gets to answer your questions she has to answer of few of our unique inquiries.

1. Where are you from and how are you liking Chattanooga?
I’m originally from Gainesville, GA. It is much smaller town with a whole bunch of chicken plants. In fact, they just did the “giant chicken” holiday lighting (yes, I’m serious). My family and I are really enjoying Chattanooga! I love that there is so much art here, which is so great for my husband who is an artist. My favorite coffee shop has to be Stone Cup Coffee and I love hanging out at McKay’s and buying too many books. There are so many museums and great restaurants, but there’s also the river and mountains and that makes my heart happy.

2. What do you like to do in your free time?
I haven’t had much free time thanks to graduate school, but I cannot wait to get back to the hobbies I love once I graduate in December. I love reading, baking, knitting, crocheting, and writing in my bullet journal. I also have a blog, YouTube channel, and I’m pretty active on social media. I love spending time with my husband, Sam, and our three kids.

3. What is your favorite sport?
Roller Derby! I’ve cheered on Athens, Georgia’s Classic City Roller Girls for years. I’ll be cheering on Chattanooga Roller Girls from now on unless they play Classic City.

4. Do you have any pets?
I have two cats, Beauregard and Ruth Bader Ginspurrr.

5. What is the last book you read?
Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire. That sounds really pretentious, but I was reading it for my graduate school thesis. I have a big stack of non-theory, fun books to read over the holiday break.

6. Top 5 bands?
Arcade Fire, Explosions in the Sky, Wolf Alice, Future Islands, and Bikini Kill.

7. Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter?
FALL with winter as a close second. I love pumpkin spice lattes, scarves, bright leaves, and cardigans. Give me colder, cozy weather any day.

8. If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would you choose?
Michelle Obama, Sylvia Plath, and Margaret Atwood.

9. What was your favorite class in college?
Creative writing. Before I landed on library science I applied for an MFA in poetry. I didn’t get into the program I wanted, but that turned out to be a good thing! I stayed in libraries, realized I loved it, and now I’m finishing my masters in library and information science.

10. Favorite cartoon?
The new She-Ra cartoon is pretty rad.
