Kolwyck Library & Information Commons, in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of ChattState, will host the 10th Annual Edible Book Festival on Monday, October 27 from 1pm - 3pm.

October 27 is a special day to us, as it is the birthday of the first librarian of ChattState and the namesake of our library, Augusta R. Kolwyck. Mrs. Kolwyck established the library at ChattState with not only books, typewriters, and audio tapes but also games and a pot of coffee always brewing. With the spirit of student success always top of mind, Mrs. Kolwyck left a generous endowment to the library with the stipulation that all funds were to be used to support students.

To celebrate this incredible woman, we invite you to base your literary edible creation on your favorite book published in the last 60 years. We're excited to see what fantastic, literary-inspired baked creations our students, faculty, and staff can create! Attendees will vote for their favorites, and we will have guest judges for special prizes. Coffee and a birthday cake for Mrs. Kolwyck will be served, and after winners are announced, the edible creations can be devoured!

Sign up to participate in the festival and compete for prizes and bragging rights! Or join us on October 27 from 1pm - 3pm to vote for your favorites and...eat cake!

Need baking ideas? We have cookbooks on display - come check it out!

Changes: Kolwyck Library joins Tenn-Share Consortium for Overdrive/Libby

The Kolwyck Library joined a Tenn-Share Overdrive consortium. The consortium allows Chattanooga State faculty, staff, and students access to a shared collection with other colleges in Tennessee. This access increases the number of titles available for checkout!

For example, in our June blog post about audio books, it was stated that the library had over 230 audio book titles. After joining the Overdrive consortium of libraries, there are now over 1,500 audio book titles to access!

There are now over 5,900 magazine titles available to access through the Overdrive consortium!

And of course, more digital books to be read!

ChattState Libby users will see a change in signing in.

If you have not already signed in, a box will display titled sign in with my card. Then you find your library, Chattanooga State Community College. Validate your ChattState credentials. After validating your sign-in, you will be able to access Tenn-Share Academic!

This change did not happen overnight. Library staff worked on this over many months including arranging, drafting the contract, logistics, and attending meetings. But now, through the cooperation of other libraries in Tennessee through the Tenn-Share Overdrive Consortium, we have access to many more titles and resources in Libby!

June 2025 – Audiobook Appreciation Month

By April Shaw

June is Audiobook Appreciation Month!

Audiobooks can be enjoyed on the go, while cooking, working out, taking a bath, etc. As an audiobook listener myself, I encourage readers who struggle with print to try a different medium. If you love podcasts, give audiobooks a try!

KLIC has a curated collection of over 231 audiobook titles available online to check out via a database called Libby (also known as Overdrive Books). When searching the catalog for your title, select books with “Full Text Available” or “Online Access” from Overdrive Books (Libby). You can check out up to 10 at a time, so browse and enjoy!

Accessing Libby

There are multiple ways to access Libby! There is the app available for download from Google Play and the Apple Store (i-Pad and i-Phone only)! To find Libby online from our homepage, go to Database List, then search for Libby from the search bar.

Adding Our Library

Adding our library on Libby is simple! On the Libby homepage, click “Sign In With My Card.” On the next screen, select “Chattanooga State Login.”
Complete the Microsoft Login process (same as logging into your email or eLearn). Once your sign-in is complete, Chatt State will show up as your library with a linked card.

April 2025: Earth Month

By April Shaw

This April, KLIC is celebrating Earth Month 2025!

First celebrated on April 4th, 1970, Earth Month is a time to raise awareness for environmental issues that affect our present and future, to create a dialog about solutions to the ongoing climate crisis we face and motivate our communities to action.

Marie Cullis—KLIC Acquisitions and Green Team Leader at Chattanooga State—is a passionate advocate on this subject:

“This is the only planet we have, and it is our habitat. We are the only species that intentionally harms its own habitat. We need to change that. […] That's why we all need to learn about these topics. I hope my display can help a few people learn more!”

The Earth Month display tackles four categories in particular: climate change/crisis, pollution and plastic, endangered species, and environmental solutions. If any of these subjects are of interest to you, stop by and check out this mini collection!

Marie took a varied approach when preparing for this display. Her curated collection of resources includes books, e-books, audiobooks, films, and even children’s books. It is an excellent representation of the extent of information we have available on this subject, and there is still more on the shelves and online!

KLIC even offers a specific Green Collection available to browse via Libby. We hope this display will be a launch point for environmental activism within our community! Explore the KLIC Green Guide and learn about Bees, Sustainable Living and more!

Feel inspired to act? We encourage you to take advantage of both print and online resources, so you can be armed with information to start your own campaign! Here are four simple actions you can start with:

1. Planting a tree

2. Donating to a related charity

3. Saving on household energy for a month

4. Hold an event for Earth Action Day (Apr 22)

It is important to know that the solutions are out there, and we should not wait for others to act first. We can be the change for ourselves and for future generations.
