ChattState Reads

Did you know Chattanooga State has a book club? ChattState Reads meets throughout the semester discussing different chapters and aspects of a selected book. In addition to lively debate, participants get to share tasty treats and meet other literary-obsessed students. Michele Hough (along with Brittney Davidson, Ann Nicodemi, Scott Seagle, and Carolyn Miller) hosts these events throughout the semester. Michele is spreading the word about ChattState Reads and answered a few questions for KLIC readers interested in joining.

1. What is ChattState Reads?
ChattState Reads is a book club designed to foster reading for pleasure at Chattanooga State. This club is open to students, faculty, and staff.

2. How do you become a member?
You don't need to be a member to join the book club. You just have to read, then come and talk about the book. And have fun and eat snacks!

3. Why should students attend?
Students should attend to become involved with their school community and meet people on campus. ChattState Reads is a good way to meet new people who share the same interests as you.

4. How can students find out more information?
Email me at Michele.Hough@chattanoogastate.edu or go to our Facebook page.

ChattState Reads meets throughout the semester in the library's Mobile Classroom from 12-1 on the following dates:

Chatt State Reads Michael Pollan's The Botany of Desire

This semester the Chatt State Reads Book Club will read and discuss a remarkable work of non-fiction that enlightens us on the history and impact of man's pursuit to satisfy four distinctly human desires with four common plants:
  • to experience sweetness in the sense of taste--the apple
  • to add beauty to his environment--the tulip
  • to induce pleasure by altering his brain chemistry--the marijuana plant
  • to control nature--the potato
In his much acclaimed book The Botany of Desire, author Michael Pollan explores our desires and delves into the psychology of why we pursue these plants. As Mr Pollan says,

"We don't give plants nearly enough credit.
They have been working on us; they've been using us for their own purposes."

Join us for lunch (provided for the first 15 attendees) and a look at nature the way you have never considered it before. Come by the library and pick up a copy of the book (limited quantities) and participate in our discussions at noon in the library classroom on these dates:
February 23--Part 1
March 16--Part 2
April 6--Part 3
Aprill ? (to be determined by participants)--Part 4

Join our book club: CHATT STATE READS!

With assistance from history instructor Scott Seagle, a new club was formed this year: a book club that we have named CHATT STATE READS!   We have met twice already, but students are invited to join us for 3 more gatherings to discuss the book selection for this semester:

If you would like to join us for an interesting discussion of this important work and need a copy of the book, come by the library and ask for Vicky Leather, Dean of Library Services, or Tisa Houck, or Cathy Bell.

Our next meetings will be:
  • October 26 at 2:30 in the library's classroom--discuss chapters 4-6
  • November 10 at 2:00 in the library's conference/mulitmedia room--chapters 7-9
  • November 16 at 3:00 in the library/s classroom--live video interview with author Joe Starita
Be thinking of other books that you think would stimulate group discussions and bring your ideas with you!

We hope to foster an interest in reading and discussing a different book each semester.
