Hannah Boyer is our new library assistant 3! The library assistant 3 position is a multifaceted position combining public services duties and divisional administrative support duties including public desk coverage, payroll, helping with on-boarding library work-study students, and more. We were able to ask Hannah some not so frequently asked questions!
1. Name a movie that you think is better than the book.
Controversial!! I think that the show "The Magicians" was almost a perfect show...and the same cannot be said about the books. The characters on the show are complex and ridiculous and endlessly resilient. The characters in the books somehow fall flat. The last time I tried to read them was about a decade ago, perhaps it is time to give them a second chance?
2. What was your favorite class in college?
I have so many!! It would probably be between a course titled "The Novel" where we studied the evolution of novels in the English language, and a capstone course studying Gothic literature of the 18th and 19th century. However, the most impactful class I took was the very first English survey course I took Spring semester of my freshman year. I sat through one class and went to change my major to English lit. I believe it changed the course of my entire life.
3. Favorite local restaurant?
It is a tossup between Two Ten Jack (the best ramen place in town) and The Rosecomb. If I'm picking the restaurant, you can bet on it being one of those!
4. List one thing about you that few people know.
I have a water collection! When I travel somewhere new, I always try to find a river, or I go to the coast if I'm near an ocean, and I gather some water, rocks, and sand. When I get home, I put it in an apothecary bottle, label it, and stick it on a bookshelf. It's a way for me to remember all of the places I've been and how they're all connected.
5. Name one thing you think Chatt State students should know about the library.
We have graphic novels!! And we are always happy to look at any new recommendations you have!
6. Favorite cartoon?
It depends on the kind of cartoon! Favorite cartoon from when I was a kid is probably Gargoyles or The Wild Thornberrys. My favorite superhero cartoon is Teen Titans (the original...sorry to all of the Teen Titans, Go fans, it just wasn't the same). My favorite anime is probably Yuri on Ice, and whatever style you would categorize Castlevania as (trust me, no one can agree on where it fits), that's a favorite as well.
7. What’s your favorite holiday?
Halloween!! Or my birthday, which is absolutely a holiday. Since my birthday is in September, I consider it a pre-Halloween celebration anyway.
8. What are your favorite podcasts?
My possibly all-time favorite is "And That's Why We Drink". One host tells a paranormal story and the other covers a true crime story. The first podcast I loved was "Lore" which attempts to find the origins of the folklore in different regions, and it is still a comfort favorite. I also love "You Can See Me in the Dark" which is a podcast out of Memphis that has people telling their own stories about weird and unexplainable things that have happened to them. "Spooked" has a similar premise, and it is an amazingly well-produced podcast. If anyone ever has creepy podcast recommendations, let me know!
9. Spring, Summer, Winter, or Fall?
Fall all the way. There is something so dreamy about reaching the end of the bustling, loud Summer with the promise of Winter rest not quite upon us. It is a sort of muffled feeling that you can float in, simply moving along with the drizzle and the leaves.
10. Who's your favorite movie/TV librarian?
I adore Evelyn (Evie) from The Mummy. I was a huge Indiana Jones fan as a kid, but I knew that I was a bookish girl who probably would never find herself in a grand adventure. Evie got to do both! As soon as I saw her, I wanted to be her.
11. If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be?
What a terribly difficult question to answer! Unfortunately, the fictional media I consume tends to be worlds that, while I love them, I would not want to inhabit. I'll go for two (can you tell yet that I am an indecisive person?) that maybe aren't horribly tragic. The first is Jemma Simmons, who is from a terrible Marvel TV show that I adore and am rewatching right now. She is wicked smart, loyal, and can hold her own in a fight. The second is a childhood favorite: Piper Halliwell from "Charmed". Her power is the coolest of all of the sisters, her '90s style is still iconic, and she is so strong in every sense of the word. #complexfemalecharacters
