Rick Bragg, Lila Q. Weaver and Chatt State Writers@Work



Southern writers Lila Q. Weaver and Rick Bragg will be on campus and in Chattanooga venues this week! All Chatt State students in English 1020 -English Composition II course, read and wrote about All Over But the Shoutin’ by Bragg and Darkroom: A Memoir in Black and White, a graphic memoir by Weaver.

Rick Bragg is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of All Over But the Shoutin', Ava's Man, The Prince of Frogtown, and most recently, Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Story. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1996 for his feature writing at The New York Times.

Lila Quintero Weaver is the author-illustrator of a debute graphic novel that explores the connections between immigration and race. Darkroom: A Memoir in Black and White. Darkroom is the story of Weaver's family immigration to the American South from Argentina in 1961 when she was five years old.

Public events for this year's Chatt State Writers@Work are:
  • Monday, April 13 at 6:00pm - Chatt State's Writers@Work welcome Rick Bragg and Lila Q Weaver, who will read from their works, followed by a Q&A and book signing. This event is free and open to the public. Chattanooga Public Library Auditorium, 1001 Broad St., Chattanooga, TN, 37402

  • Tuesday, April 14 at 7:00pm - Chatt State Professor Lori Barton will interview Rick Bragg and Lila Quintero Weaver at Chattanooga State in the Humanities Auditorium. There will be a dessert reception and book signing following the interview in the Humanities Lobby. This event is free and open to the public. Chattanooga State Community College Humanities Auditorium.

  • Wednesday, April 15 at 6:30pm - 8:30pm - Readings by Rick Bragg and Lila Quintero Weaver followed by book signing and dessert reception. Following the reading, receive free admission to the Hunter Museum's exhibit of Eudora Welty's photographs. This event is free and open to the public. The Hunter Museum of American Art, 10 Bluff View, Chattanooga, TN, 37403.

  • Thursday, April 16, 4:00pm - 5:00pm - Rick Bragg and Lila Quintero Weaver will discuss the art and craft of writing with Chattanooga State creative writing students and members of the Chattanooga Writers Guild. This event is free and open to the public. This event will be held in the newly dedicated Vicky Leather Mobile Classroom in the Chattanooga State Augusta R. Kolwyck Library and Information Commons (KLIC).
Chatt State Writers@Work previously presented with Jill McCorkle, Ishmael Reed, and Terry Kay. TheWriters@Work was selected in 2014 as the exemplary program in the category of Enhancing Literature and Cultural Arts.
