The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Liesel Meminger is well aquainted with death. Or is Death well acquainted with her? They first meet as Death quietly collects her younger brother's soul while Liesel travels across Nazi Germany to meet her new foster parents. He watches at her brother's burial as Liesel steals a book; the first of her illustrious career.

Liesel slowly settles into her new home and new life. Hans, her new papa, begins to win her over with his accordian playing and kind heart. Rosa, on the other hand, is a hard woman full of commands and a nasty habit for name-calling but Liesel learns that although Mama is a hard woman, she has a soft spot for helping others. Liesel begins to make new friends, learns to play soccer, and of course, keeps stealing. She steals from book burning Nazi parties and the Mayor's mansion. The Hubermans don't say anything about Liesel's criminal secret, because they have one of their own. They're hiding a Jewish boy in their basement. Will Liesel be able to keep their secret? Or will Max be discovered?
