Everything from First Ladies of the United States to pop culture in the Arab world, Credo offers variety and facts in an easy to search database. If your professor won't allow you to cite anything from Wikipedia, Credo is an excellent resource for quick, accurate facts.

Native Americans, Veterans, and Thanksgiving

November is a busy celebratory month!

In the library we are celebrating Native American Heritage Month with a book display and a Native American guide. This guide provides information and links about Native American books, articles, library videos, YouTube videos, and a link to the TVA documentation in 1936.

When TVA bought the land around the Tennessee River that would become covered by the waters of Chickamauga Lake, the agency sent out professional teams to document Native American villages. Among the documentation were burial mounds. One mound, the "Hixon Mound," was located south of present day Dallas Bay. The images in the collection showed how this mound looked before excavation. The "Hixon Mound" is now inundated by the Lake.

Another box in the Native American guide has information about the Navajo code talkers. This secret code was never broken and was used even after World War II. The Navajo code talkers are mentioned in another sign located at the Native American book display that connects the Navajo code talkers to 11-11-11: Veterans Day!

Veterans Day is to thank all of the living veterans for their service to country. So please, thank a Vet today. The History Channel has a page dedicated to the Thank A Vet social campaign:

It's Constitution Week

Constitution Day is September 17 and Chattanooga State is celebrating with a weeklong commemoration. Many colleges across the country will be celebrating the signing day of the Constitution.

Yes, you heard it right! In order to create more capacity in the "Tiger Express Lab" in the Student Center, the library's public computers will be available for schedule input through August 5.

Schedule input is designed to be self-service, but those who need a refresher can view the Registration portion of Online Orientation.

If students come to the library to input their schedules and have other kinds of issues to resolve before registration can be completed, they will need to return to the Student Center and see registration staff or see an advisor in IMC-201.

According to Brad McCormick, Director of Admissions & Records, August 8 is the true start of the Mission: Enrollment plan. Beginning on that day, Student Affairs will provide some staff in the library to handle questions beyond the basic schedule input process.

Dr. Andrew Frank to Speak on Trail of Tears

On Thursday, July 28, Dr. Andrew Frank, author of numerous books and articles on American Indian culture, removal, and history, will speak about race and identity during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Dr. Frank's presentation is part of a Trail of Tears Teachers' Workshop, sponsored by the Russell Cave National Monument in Fort Payne, Alabama. Chattanooga State and the Augusta R. Kolwyck library are excited to offer this opportunity to hear a renowned expert discuss the historical and cultural implications of the Trail of Tears.

Surely (and don't call me Shirley!), in July you will make time for some recreation in a local (or not so local) park and do your part in recognition of National Parks and Recreation Month. Chatt State adjoins one of the prettiest parks anywhere in the south--The Tennessee Riverpark--a free, multi-use path that is open year 'round. There are terrific places for picnics, birdwatching, playgrounding, reading, cycling, walking, fishing, boating, AND studying!

Inside the library, you will see our current book display that celebrates July as National Parks and Recreation Month. A selection of beautiful books will inspire you to head out into the great beyond for a few days in the mountains, at the beach, in the forests, and amid cities, towns, deserts, and plains.

Chatt State Students Can Make a Difference--Help Your Neighbors!

So many of us have been affected by the recent storms, and in response to the need for volunteers and donations, the SGA is encouraging all of us to make a difference--even a small one matters--by participating in any of the following relief efforts.

A new Facebook page has been created for Chatt State Disaster Relief--Join Today!

1. Give blood. Blood Assurance supplies are critically low in Chattanooga and the surrounding area. A full list of BA donation locations is here. Take time out of your day to give life. Blood cannot be made.

2. Drop off supplies of food, clothing, water, and other household goods. You can do this at several locations. Any local Salvation Army or Red Cross office. Ringgold, GA was especially hard hit, and Catoosa County Sheriff Phil Summers says anyone looking to donate to victims in the Ringgold area should drop off supplies at the Sheriff's Office.
3. Volunteer for the local Red Cross, which is scheduling 2 hour shifts to help at the Morris Hill relief site. Call 892-2071 to sign up or click here.

4. Donate to the Salvation Army. Go to their website, http://www.csarmy.org/, or text the word “Give” to 80888.

5. Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) is available to low income storm victims in 26 counties of East Tennessee. Click here to find out details.

We wish everyone well in the effort to rebuild homes, neighborhoods, and lives.

Poet Marilyn Nelson and Chatt State Students Read in the Library

This week is going to be awesome! How often do we get to hear poetry by an award-winning writer AND have our own creative writing students read their works? Well, hardly ever!

This week is the exception, though, and here are the dates & times for your calendars:

Thursday, April 28 at 11:00 and 1:30--poet Marilyn Nelson will read from several of her publications. Dean Don Andrews says, "You are invited to attend and listen to the meaningful pieces that reflect Dr. Nelson's interests in her African-American heritage, historical figures and events, and our American culture. Besides several volumes of poetry, children's books, and biographic volumes, Dr. Nelson is the author of SWEETHEARTS OF RHYTHM, a book of poetry and photos that celebrate the achievement of an all-girl swing band of the 1930's. A reception will follow the second reading, and everyone is invited to meet Ms. Nelson and talk with her about her writing.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the 26th, 27th, & 28th at 5:30--Professor Bill Teem's creative writing students will read from some of this semester's creations. Professor Teem never fails to bring out the imaginative, unique talents of his students, and we always enjoy hearing them read.

All events will take place in the presentation area in the North end of the library.
Don't miss this opportunity to expand your horizons, enjoy a cultural experience, and commune with talent.

This year the library's Hats Off to Excellence Award was given to one of our hard-working, dedicated, knowledgeable student assistants--Nathan Jones.

When you come in the library on any day of the week, you might see Nathan wearing one of several "hats." He works at the check-out desk and at the technology help desk and provides excellent service at both places. Whether you are looking for an item on reserve or need help with eLearn, Nathan is ready and more than willing to provide his expertise.

Kevin Livingood utilizes multiple photographic techniques to create his final works. He primarily relies upon a style know as "High Dynamic Range" to merge multiple exposures into a single composition. This technique allows Kevin to accentuate the outlier ranges within highlights and shadows that are ordinarily lost within the confines of a single exposure.

Kevin also enjoys the art of long exposure photography. Using a specially designed neutral density filter which restricts light to 0.1% of what the human eye can normally see, he is able to produce very long exposures to unveil movement, textures and mood which is normally absent to the human eye.

As photographic art being Kevin’s outlet and form of expression, he prefers to create unique and one of a kind images. Many of his images are planed out months in advance and are only created under appropriate conditions.

On Wednesday, March 30 at 3:00, the drum roll began for the unveiling of a new technology lab in the library--the Apple Corps! (Yes, pronounced just like "apple core." Clever, huh?) Representatives from SGA and the library were present to make the announcement, and apple juice, apples, and McDonald's apple pies were served.

Here is a little Q&A for those of you who love details, and you know who you are.

What is the Apple Corps?

As a result of the demand and need for more high-end software on the library's Apple computers, additional programs were added, such as Adobe Creative Suite Version 5, Final Cut Pro, and Final Cut Express (video-editing software) that will allow users to create products and work on projects even better than they could before. Two more Apple computers were added, bringing the total number to SIX.

Who saw the need and got behind it?

Faculty in the film production, website design, and graphic arts departments wanted their students to be able to use state-of-the-art technology that would allow them to expand their capabilities and prepare for the jobs that will require them to use these programs.

How were these enhancements paid for?
Funds were provided through students' Technology Access Fees, and the SGA provided headphones with budget allotments designated for student projects.

Where is the Apple Corps?

The Macintosh computers are located at the collaboration computer stations in the North area of the library just past the Technology Help Desk. Look for the BIG monitors and the Apple logos.

When are the Apple computers available?
Ah, that's the benefit of having the technology IN THE LIBRARY. The library's spring semester hours include evenings and weekends, providing access seven days a week! So, come in and use them any time we're here. Use is on a "first-come" basis, though.

Just another way that Chattanooga State is providing students with technology and opportunity as we prepare them for what we believe will be a productive future.

John Stigall Poetry Contest Winners Read in the Library!

On March 23rd at 4:00 winners of the second annual John Stigall Poetry Contest will read their winning entries at a public gathering in the library. This event is a memorial tribute to the life of former Chattanooga State English professor and poet John Stigall, and the library is pleased to be able to host the readings.

Congratulations to this year's first, second, and third place prize winners:

1st place winner – Charles Williams - $150

2nd place winner – William M. Brown - $75

3rd place winner – Savannah Mazda - $25

Chatt State Reads Michael Pollan's The Botany of Desire

This semester the Chatt State Reads Book Club will read and discuss a remarkable work of non-fiction that enlightens us on the history and impact of man's pursuit to satisfy four distinctly human desires with four common plants:

to experience sweetness in the sense of taste--the apple
to add beauty to his environment--the tulip
to induce pleasure by altering his brain chemistry--the marijuana plant
to control nature--the potato

In his much acclaimed book The Botany of Desire, author Michael Pollan explores our desires and delves into the psychology of why we pursue these plants. As Mr Pollan says,

"We don't give plants nearly enough credit.

They have been working on us; they've been using us for their own purposes."

Join us for lunch (provided for the first 15 attendees) and a look at nature the way you have never considered it before. Come by the library and pick up a copy of the book (limited quantities) and participate in our discussions at noon in the library classroom on these dates:

Your official Chattanooga State photo ID card is an essential item for library services, campus security, free CARTA bus rides, discounts around town, and other benefits too numerous to mention.

What, you haven't had your ID made yet? No money? No time? No good hair days?

Not to worry. The first ID is FREE! It takes only 2-3 minutes! Sorry, can't help with the hair. : (

ID cards are made in the Student Center, room 216.
For the first two weeks of classes, Jan. 18-Jan. 28, you can have your ID made anytime between 8:00-5:30, Monday through Thursday, and 8:00-4:30 on Fridays.

After Jan. 28, hours of operation for ID cards will be:

Photography of Pulitzer Prize Winner Robin Hood on Display NOW!

If you ever doubted that a picture is worth a thousand words, you will want to lay that doubt to rest this week.

From the press release:

On November 13, Chattanooga State Community College opens an exhibition of photographs by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Robin Hood. On view in the Augusta R. Kolwyck Library, the exhibit is a collection of twenty images, which were specifically selected for Chattanooga State and are included in the newly-published book, Historic Tennessee: Photographs by Robin Hood. The exhibition, which is open to the public free of charge, will be on view beginning Saturday, November 13, and continue through Saturday, November 20.

Chosen by Hood for this regional presentation, the photographs in the exhibition showcase places and scenes that have a historical relevance for Chattanooga and the surrounding area.

The book, Historic Tennessee, is a celebration of the past: a salute to Tennessee’s rich historical and architectural heritage. Through the beauty of Hood’s memorable images and an eloquent narrative by writer James A. Crutchfield, the publication captures the diversity and uniqueness of the Tennessee experience. Aside from the photographs featured in the Chattanooga State exhibit, the book includes imagery of sites that date back many thousands of years as well as pictures of places that recount three centuries of the Tennessee story.

A graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), Hood has had a distinguished career. After earning a degree in painting and serving in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant during the Vietnam conflict, he joined the staff of the Chattanooga News Free Press. In 1977, he won the Pulitzer Prize for
Photography for his photograph featuring a disabled veteran with his child which was taken during an Armed Forces Day parade. In 1986 he received UTC’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. An ardent promoter of Tennessee, Hood’s photographs document the essence of his home state and are central to other publications such as The Tennesseans: A People and Their Land; The Tennesseans: A People Revisited; Neyland: Life of a Stadium; and Tennessee Country: In the Land of Their Fathers.

The exhibition of Hood’s photographs and the publication of the book Historic Tennessee: Photographs by Robin Hood are sponsored by First Tennessee Bank, Independent Healthcare Properties, LLC, Morning Pointe Assisted Living, U. S. Xpress Enterprises, Inc., Republic Parking System, Henderson Hutcherson & McCullough PLLC, and the State of Tennessee.

Hood’s photography will be on view November 13-20 in the Augusta R. Kolwyck Library, which is located at 4501 Amnicola Highway. The library hours are noted below.

Library Takes No Break During Fall Break

Guy 1: Dude, that fall break is so short I don't have time to go anywhere and get back. What's the use of having a break if it's that short?

Guy 2: Yeah, I have to work anyway, so I have no plans except maybe go to the library for a few hours each day.

Guy 2: You know, our library, right in there.

Guy 1: Ah, they're not open when there's no classes.

Guy 2: Oh, yeah, they are. There's a sign outside the door that says they'll be open regular hours during fall break, Monday, Oct. 18 and Tuesday, Oct. 19--7:30 am until 9:00 pm.

Guy 1: That's cool. Maybe I can work on some of that stuff I didn't turn in this week.

Guy 2: I'm not behind, but I want to see if I can get a little bit ahead in that online class I had to take. My computer at home is busted.

Guy 1: Yeah, well, maybe I'll see you in there, then. But don't spend the whole break studying, man. You need to let your brain take a break!

Banned Books and Freedom of Speech: Chattanooga State Celebrating Constitution Week

What does freedom of speech mean to you?

That’s the question for this year’s celebration of the Constitution at Chattanooga State. The Chattanooga State Library is participating in this celebration with a display of banned books. Did you know that over 50 books were challenged or banned in the United States during 2009-2010? The American Library Association releases information about banned/challenged books each year to educate each of us on the importance of protecting the freedoms written in our Constitution.

Here are some banned book titles from the last few years and the general reasons why the books were banned or challenged:

Great Gatsby: language and sexual references
Catcher in the Rye: profanity, sexual references, inappropriate for age group
To Kill a Mockingbird: sexual references, profanity, use of racial slur
Color Purple: homosexuality, incest, rape, depiction of drug use, sexually explicit
Brave New World: contempt of women, religion, marriage, and family.

Listed below are two examples of books banned or restricted in the United States in 2009-2010. This information is from the American Library Association’s 2010 Banned Books report.

I Know why the Caged Bird Sings: “Challenged in the Newman-Crows Landing, Calif. School District (2009) on a required reading list presented by the Orestimba High English Department. A trustee questioned the qualifications of Orestimba staff to teach a novel depicting African American culture.”

Hills Like White Elephants: A Short Story: The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway: “Pulled from a Litchfield, N.H. Campbell High School elective course classroom (2009) after parents voiced their concerns about a short-stories unit called “Love/Gender/Family Unit” that dealt with subject matters including abortion, cannibalism, homosexuality, and drug use. The parents said the stories promoted bad behavior and a “political agenda” and they shouldn’t be incorporated into classroom teachings. The Campbell High School English curriculum adviser eventually resigned.”

You love doing more than one thing at a time, huh?

Well, here are some of the things you will be able to do in the library:

Use computers for coursework, email, eLearn activities, and other essential academic tasks. (NOTE: Please save non-coursework pasttimes until late in the day when demand for computers is somewhat lower. Thanks!)
Print and create documents using Microsoft Office 2007 programs: Word, Excel, PPT, and MORE!
Use textbooks that are on reserve--ask at the check-out desk--and use them only in the library.
Use group study rooms for collaboration on projects, assignments, or tests.
Reserve the Conference/Multimedia Room for groups to work on media-intense projects, create video presentations, record Skype interviews, and who-knows-what-all.
Study alone in areas where noise is limited.
Check out current fiction, DVDs, books on CD, and lots of other books for your assignments, of course!
Ask for assistance with assignments, printing, technology, eLearn tasks, and other special needs.

We're here to help you succeed, so don't hesitate to ask. Come early, though, the demand is great!

Here's how it should work:

1. We buy books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, and CDs so you don't have to.

2. You check them out to use for a few days or a few weeks.

3. We tell you when you should return them (by August 10) so others can use them, too. (Remember how you learned to share in kindergarten? Still works.)

4. You return them on on before the due date.

5. We check them in, and everybody's happy.

Here's how it sometimes works:

1. Same as above.

2. Same as above.

3. Same as above.

4. You don't return them by the end of the semester--August 10.

5. Your grades and transcripts are held until you DO return them.

To avoid the consequences mentioned in #5 above, just bring back whatever you borrowed by the last day of classes (August 10), and no harm will come to you or your family AND no late fees will be charged.

Should you fail to accomplish your mission, just bring the stuff back when you remember it, and we'll give you the infamous CLEAR SLIP that you take to the Bursar's Office for the ultimate forgiveness and erasure of your hold.

REMEMBER: It's all up to you, so do the right thing and all will be well.

We'd like to know your opinions about what you see as the library's usefulness to you or what you would like to see improved, added, or changed.

June is Audiobook Month--Listen Up!

To the right just around the check-out desk is a display stand with the remainder of the collection for you to browse to your heart's content. Titles include classics, fiction, and non-fiction. There's something for everybody.

NEW! National Library Symbol--What's Up With That?

Look at the two images below, and comment with your answer to the question under the images. Hey, we're not trying to play any kind of psychological game with you. This is an actual question.

Recently, an additional National Library symbol was introduced as a way to let people know about the availability of technology at libraries.
If you saw the symbol on the right as you were driving down the highway, would you say to yourself: "Self, there is a library at the next exit because I just saw the library symbol," OR would you say, "Self, there's a WiFi facility at the next exit where I can use my laptop."

Just curious to know if the laptop symbol says what it is meant to say, or if it will need some "gettin' used to" as your granny might have put it.

Angela Ditmar's Vibrant Art is on Display in the Library

We are excited to be able to display a selection of works by local artist Angela Ditmar. The exhibit will be shown in the library through June 24.

This collection of works was inpired by Angela's visit to the Philipines. She says, "The term “baranguay” is used to describe a division of land in a Filipino city. By definition it is the smallest unit of government in Filipino culture. As I visited various cities and rural areas of Luzon, the northern region of the Philippines, I was compelled to record an informal baranguay marking system....Each baranguay was coded by a color or color sequence, and on rare occasions, a symbol had been used. Each sequence was then painted on electrical poles and trees along the streets throughout each baranguay. This system, whether placed with intentions towards patronage and pride, invariably became a visual language, demarcating invisible boundaries and territories.

Competition, persuasion, balance, control and defiance are the behaviors that come to mind when something is territorial. I have discovered that these found color sequences combined with the compositional devices and the materiality of a painted field imitates some of these behaviors."

Angela received a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art from Hunter College, City University of New York, where she has been a guest instructor of graduate courses in Theory and Criticism. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Angela is currently teaching foundation courses as an Adjunct Professor for the Department of Art at UTC, as well as working for the department as the Visual Resources Librarian.

Recently, a group of faculty and staff, along with a few librarians, went on a field trip to a large, local bookstore for a shopping spree! Why do you think they spent part of their day doing this?

a) They wanted to try out a new restaurant near the mall.

b) They had money that was burning holes in their pockets.

c) They love to spend other people's money.

d) They were invited by Vicky Leather, Dean of Library Services, to choose books and DVDs that they thought would enhance learning and be entertaining.

If you chose "D," you're right! And those items are currently on display in the library and ready to be checked-out. So bring your library cards, or student IDs and take some home. You will be pleasantly surprised at the variety of topics, the quality of the content, and the general fun-ness of the collection.

ChattState Theatre Presents Godspell March 26-28

If you have never experienced the vibrant musical Godspell, you will have that opportunity this weekend--March 26, 27, and 28--when students in the Chattanooga State Reperatory Theatre Program present performances right here on our campus in the Humanities Auditorium. Show times are as follows:

Friday, March 26 & Saturday, March 27---7:30 PM
Sunday, March 28---2:30 and 7:30 PM

Sherry Landrum and Rex Knowles, Program Directors, toured with the New York company of "Godspell", later performed in the San Francisco company, and were a part of the 10th Anniversary production in Los Angeles. Directed by Sherry Landrum, the production will be based on the original staging, set, and costumes. Musical direction by Jeffrey Parker. The score is composed by Stephen Schwartz ("Wicked", "Pippin", and many more). The lyrics for many of the songs, including “Turn Back, O Man,” “Save the People,” “Day by Day,” “Bless the Lord,” “All Good Gifts,” and “We Beseech Thee” are from traditional hymns.

Tickets are $10.
Students, faculty, and staff of Chattanooga State
are admitted free with I.D.

"Godspell was conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak, and offers music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. One of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time, Godspell is based primarily on the Gospel According to St. Matthew. Featuring a sparkling, seminal score by Stephen Schwartz, Godspell boasts a string of recognizable songs, led by the international hit, "Day By Day." The show opened 5/17/71 Off-Broadway and transferred to Broadway in 1976. It ran for 2,124 performance off-Broadway and 527 on Broadway.

As the cast of actor/clowns makes it way through "Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord," "Save The People," "Learn Your Lessons Well," "Bless the Lord," "All For The Best," "All Good Gifts," "Turn Back, O Man" and "By My Side," we, as audience members get to see the parables of Jesus Christ come humanly and hearteningly to life. The show also touchingly presents the story of Jesus' last moments beginning with the Last Supper."

Library Will Be Open During Spring Break, Mar. 8-14

From March 8-14 Chattanooga State's classes will be suspended for a well-deserved Spring Break. But while you're soaking up rays on white-sand beaches, or hiking on shade-dappled trails, or driving along country backroads, or taking the kids to Disneyworld, or just catching a few extra hours of sleep, library staff will be here--same time; same place.

You heard right! Just because it's Spring Break and classes are canceled doesn't mean there isn't work to be done. You might need to catch up on work that's already late or get ahead on work that's coming up, so we'll be open our regular hours all week to help you accomplish that.

Other support services across campus will be open as well, but their hours may vary. Only the faculty get time off, but they'll have plenty to do. You'll be turning in mountains of papers and taking way too many tests before the break, right?

Enjoy your respite, and if we don't see you next week, we'll see you March 15th for sure.

Ryan Tyler and Jordan Scruggs Win Poetry Awards

On February 23rd a celebration of and memorial tribute to the life of former Chattanooga State English professor and poet John Stigall was held in the library. The program was in recognition of Black History Month, and as a part of that event, the English Department held a poetry writing contest for which first and second prizes were awarded.

Students who received the awards were:

Ryan Tyler--1st Place award of $150
Jordan Scruggs--2nd place award of $50

Other highlights of the ceremony included an introduction of Mrs. Iris Stigall, Mr. Stigall's widow, who thanked the sponsors and spoke briefly about John's love of teaching and poetry. Several faculty recalled their fond memories of John and his close relationships with his students, his sense of humor, and his devotion to writing.

Student Ellis Wiltshire read a selection of Mr. Stigall's poetry. Other program participants included students Timiney Mott , Melinda Brown, Brandon Ellis, Mikael Rawlings, Jennifer E. Clark, Odis Gaines, Heather VanMetre; and faculty members Debbie Rudd, De'Lara Stephens, Bill Stifler, and Bill Teem.

Following the program, attendees viewed a video commemoration of Mr. Stigall and his writing.

You get in your car and automatically put on the seat belt. It's the law. But you get in bed with someone, and no law requires you to practice safe sex. Having unprotected sex can be just as dangerous as unprotected driving, so learn the facts and stay safe.

February is the month of love with Valentines's Day, National Condom Month, AND Sexual Responsibility Month merging into a campaign to get the word out that there is no excuse for not protecting yourself from STDs if you are sexually active.

Poetry Contest Winners Read Here Feb. 23

We love to have events, readings, exhibits, and other "happenings" in the library's presentation and display areas, and there is an exciting event coming up!

Here in the library on Tuesday, February 23rd, at 4:00 the students who won the poetry writing contest will read their poems, followed by the announcement and presentation of the first and second prize winners . Chairs and a podium will be set up in the North end of the library (the end next to the river for those of you are directional challenged like I am), and we'd love to have a big crowd to congratulate them on their achievement.

This event is in recognition of African-American History Month and in memory of John Stigall, Sr., Associate Professor of English.

Highlights of the evening will include:
Students will read Mr. Stigall's poetry.
Short videos of John Stigall will be shown in the library conference room.
Family members of the late Mr. Stigall will be invited to attend.

Your Library Now Open on Sundays. Yippee!

Isn't that terrific! The library will be open on Sundays from 2:00-6:00 throughout the semester. That means that you will be able to find a quiet place to study, use eLearn, reserve the media/conference room, do the research for your assignments, use reserved textbooks, access course-related software on the PCs and Macs, create PowerPoints, and write voluminous papers with library staff here to assist you if you need some help.

Dwight Hunter will staff the reference desk, and a rotation of other library staff will be at the check-out desk.

Easter is the only Sunday that we will be closed, so take advantage of this opportunity to get away from the chaos in other areas of your lives and find peace and study time at the Kolwyck oasis. Uh, I mean library.

BTW, we're open longer hours on Saturdays--10:00-6:00.

Art Exhibit in the Library--Pastels by Susan Doubleday

Local artist Susan Doubleday has loaned to the library six of her beautiful pastel landscapes. Ms. Doubleday is an award-winning artist who holds signature membership in the Tennessee Watercolor Society. She has worked most recently in pastels creating vibrant landscapes, examples of which are on display for your enjoyment through the month of February.

Susan says of her work, "Painting, for me, allows me to express the colors and energy of the landscape and capture that in my art. I draw the energy from my surroundings, places I visit, and the elements that catch my eye visually.

Monday, January 18 has been designated as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the day we remember Dr. King and his courageous efforts to bring about civil rights for all Americans.

This day of celebration and remembrance is a federal holiday, and all federal offices and services, as well as most state government offices, will be closed. The library and all other Chattanooga State offices and classes will be closed and canceled that day.

Take this opportunity to volunteer to help others on this "Day of Service."

Now that final exams are over (whew!) and classes have ceased (yes!) and the holidays are upon us (yippee!!), it's time for the College and the library staff to take just a small break before the spring semester's classes start back on Jan. 14.

We're excited, aren't you?! Thanksgiving holidays are fast approaching, and we will close up shop for a break while some of us travel to share the holiday with family and friends, or they will come visit us, or maybe we'll just kick back and relax for a few days and let the local restaurants feed us our turkey dinners.

Whatever your plans are, we hope you have an enjoyable few days, then come back on Monday, November 30, ready to finish the semester with an all-out effort at passing every test, turning in every assignment, and attending every class.

And remember--The library will close at 4:30 pm because there are NO EVENING CLASSES ON WEDNESDAY, NOV. 25.

Have a restful, satisfying holiday and don't eat too much turkey.

November is National Native American Heritage Month! The 2009 theme is "Pride in Our Heritage, Honor to Our Ancestors."

The first paragraph of the 2009 Presidential Proclamation for this month states:

"The indigenous peoples of North America -- the First Americans -- have woven rich and diverse threads into the tapestry of our Nation's heritage. During National Native American Heritage Month, we recognize their many accomplishments, contributions, and sacrifices, and we pay tribute to their participation in all aspects of American society."

The history of Native Americans continues to be a subject dear to my heart. Curiosity struck me early as I grew up in the Great Plains and visited memorial sites where Native Americans and the U.S. government collided in battle. Now living in Tennessee, my curiosity about Native American history continues as I learn more about the Trail of Tears and Ross's Landing. My wife's grandfather was Cherokee, which has added a personal interest in the pride and heritage of Native Americans for my family.

Children's books become movies. What's your favorite one?

Unless you have been living in a soundproof, television-free, devoid-of-media environment, you have heard about the Spike Jonze film version of the classic Maurice Sendak picture book, "Where the Wild Things Are." Have you seen it yet? I have, and I was surprised, disappointed, amazed, and delighted with this interpretation of one of my most favorite children's book. (If you want to know my opinion in more detail, just ask.)

Hundreds of children's books have been made into feature films. You probably read the Harry Potter books and saw those movies. And another terrific one that's playing now is "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs."

And who can forget "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,"The Cat in the Hat," "Jumanji," The Chronicles of Narnia," "The Polar Express," "Charlotte's Web," and "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." I could go on but....

Tell us what movie made from a children's book you enjoyed. Oh, come on. you know you want to!

Fall break is coming, BUT the library will be open Oct. 19-20.

At Chattanooga State fall break means that there will be a break from classes. That's right, your classes will NOT meet on Monday, Oct. 19 and Tuesday, Oct. 20. Yippeee!!

But, and that's a BIG but, the library WILL BE OPEN regular hours on those days:

7:30 am - 9:00 pm.

So, if you're not doing anything, come by and do some "catch-up" or "get ahead" work instead of sitting around in your pajamas watching the Game Channel.

And pick up a couple dozen Krispy Kremes for us while you're at it. Pleeeeease!

Read a banned book. I triple-dog dare you!

Sometimes the little devil on my left shoulder speaks more loudly and convincingly than the little angel on my right shoulder. You've seen that cartoon, too, right? This week the tiny temptor is telling me to defy the powers that be, the book police, and read a banned book. Dare I obey and give in? You betcha!

In celebration of Banned Books Week, Sept. 26-Oct. 3, you should examine the list of books that have caused consternation, nay outrage, in the distant and recent past and exert your First Amendment rights.

According to the American Library Association. "Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States....The books featured during Banned Books Week have been targets of attempted bannings. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of the community to retain the books in the library collections."

Student: Oh, thank you so much! I will get right on it 'cause the library is open until 9:00 tonight, and I can work on it there and submit it to my drop-box. My home computer died last week. That's why I'm late getting it to you.
Instructor: That's fine. Remember the drop-box closes at 9:00 PM.

Lucky for this student that we're open on the last day of classes, August 5, until 9:00 PM. Man, it's really been busy in here this week. Where have all these students been all summer? I can't imagine that they have procrastinated on their assignments. Maybe this is all extra credit work and they want to make sure their GPAs move forward instead of backward.

But I digress....

After today, August 5, the library will not be open evenings until September 3. "What!?" you say. Come on, now. Take a break, already. Go home in the evenings and watch a few reruns of Star Trek, or take a walk on the riverwalk and count the herons, or treat your Granny to dinner, or play catch with your kids, or read War and Peace. You know you've been putting that one off!

Then come back refreshed and ready to dig in and study like your career depends on it.

Embrace Diversity: Dynamics of Cross-Cultural Communication

Wow! That's a mouthful! Maybe I can try to say that in plain language. Thanks to a TBR Access & Diversity Grant, Chattanooga State is engaging in an all-out effort to recognize and publicize the value of a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff. A recently published brochure contains our diversity statement. Here is a portion of that complete statement:

"Chattanooga State is committed to maintaining an environment of open access to learning while providing an enriched curriculum and environment that celebrates diversity. We recognize the strength of our differences and celebrate our diversity as one of our strengths. Chattanooga State views diversity and inclusion as an educational imperative and essential for career preparation...."

Each of us should understand that diversity enriches our lives by offering us a glimpse into cultures beyond our own; however, verbal and non-verbal communication styles, whether intentional or not, often hinder cultural exchange. These tips can help overcome that obstacle.

Ten Tips for Cross Cultural Communication (Kwintessential Ltd.):
1. Slow down: speak clearly to make yourself understood.
2. Separate questions; avoid asking more than one question at a time.
3. Avoid "yes" and "no" questions since they are often misunderstood.
4. Take turns speaking: make a point and listen to the response.
5. Write information down if you are unsure about being understood.
6. Be supportive to those who struggle with language barriers.
7. Make sure you were understood by summarizing what you meant.
8. Avoid using slang; sometimes meanings may be misunderstood.
9. Watch your humor: many cultures view humor as a negative.
10. Maintain etiquette in communication to avoid misunderstanding.

To help you understand the value of cultural diversity and the importance of inclusion, we will have book displays over the next couple of weeks that feature books on a variety of themes about diversity. The current display focues on teaching in a diverse classroom.

Year of Science 2009 is a year-long celebration of "how science works, why science matters, and who scientists are" which is being promoted by participants in the COPUS network. Find out more about the world of science on the new interactive website Understanding Science.org

Each month of 2009 will focus on a different aspect of science, and the July topic is Astronomy. At this website you can control a real telescope and receive access to an image that you choose to observe. I'm waiting for an email message from the MicroObservatory Guest Observer Portal that tells me how to view my inage of the Ring Nebula.

To view a sample of the books we have about the stars and everything planetary, come by the library and we'll show you how to find books on the shelf as well as ebooks. That's right, ladies and gentlemen, you can check out movies for free right here at the Chattanooga State library's circulation desk. Just show your snazzy CSTCC photo ID card and pick out two movies. That's right, TWO, will be checked out to you for four days. It's as simple as that.

Lady, your kids are starting to bug me. Don't make me get out my kid repellant.

Well, the kids are out of school for the whole dang summer, and just when I thought we'd have a homework-free few months, here they come with these horrendous reading lists. Every kid in the whole county's going to be looking for the same 10 books. How am I supposed to get my own homework done now that I'm taking classes at Chatt State and find the books they need, too? You'd think these teachers would give us all a break, ya know?

Calm down, girl. I know you're busy, but those kids need to be improving their reading skills this summer instead of vegging-out in front of the X-Box. Since you're in school at Chatt State, you're problems are solved! Just take those lists, and better yet take the kids, and find what you're looking for in the Kolwyck Library. They have an excellent collection of children's and young adult books, many of which are award winners and best books choices. Your kids can read while you study, or you can let them pick out the books they want to take home. As a student, you can take out up to 10 books for three weeks. What Library Staff Are Reading: Parker Writes Westerns!

Let's fantasize for a minute. What if Stephen King wrote romantic comedy; Orson Scott Card wrote mysteries; Danielle Steel wrote science fiction; and Dan Brown wrote kiddie lit.

Well, how about this? What if Robert Parker wrote Westerns? Whoa!! That one's over-the-top, huh? The famous author of the Spenser detective series (remember the TV show "Spenser for Hire"?) has written a Western trilogy (That would be three.), and Sharon King, library assistant, offers this review:

Most recently I have read Robert Parker's Western series Appaloosa, Resolution, and my current read, Brimstone. I don’t normally read Westerns, but since I like this author so much I thought that these had to be good too, and I haven’t been disappointed. The series features two gunmen named Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch, who travel to different towns to restore law and order where it has gone awry. In each town, Virgil Cole is hired as the Marshall for that town and Everett Hitch is his deputy. They set out to establish some semblance of law and order and shoot and kill anyone who begs to differ. Virgil and Everett are after the main bad guy in each town, who is the one who is terrorizing all of the residents and trying to take over the town. This series has lots of gunfights, but the real story is one of friendship and unconditional love. In the first book, a woman enters the picture and becomes the love interest for Virgil Cole. Virgil loves Allie unconditionally, but Allie is not faithful to him. She runs away and Virgil and Everett catch up with her in the third book.

What Staff Are Reading: Palahniuk's newest, Pygmy

I know that when I pick up a novel by Chuck Palahniuk, I won't read anything I have read before.

"Who is that, and how do you say his name?' you might ask.

Mr. Palaniuk's name is pronounced PAUL-AH-NIK (say Paula Nick), and he has written 10 novels, three works of non-fiction, and has had 2 movies made from his novels--Fight Club and Choke.

His most recent novel--Pygmy--includes all these elements:

teenage terrorists-in-training posing as foreign exchange students

extraordinairy Martial Arts exhibitions

satirical interpretations of American teens and lifestyles

fantastical English language distortions

unrelenting action and totally unique plot

Question: Should the library have a Facebook page?

Two librarians were arguing one rainy morning, and the argument went something like this:

Withit Librarian: Man, Facebook is awesome! I found people I haven't heard from in years! Now I can reconnect with all my buds from college and high school and library school, too.
Outofit Librarian: Sheesh. If those people wanted to find me, they would. I don't need Facebook in my life right now. All I do is spend time on the computer as it is.
WIL: Haven't you noticed all the students in here using Facebook?
OIL: Yeah, they ought to be studying or writing a paper or something useful.
WIL: I've seen other libraries on Facebook, too. I wonder what kind of following they have. Do you think students would follow our page if we had one?
OIL: Nah. Why would they want to do that? The library is the last place they want to follow.
WIL: I'm not so sure. Maybe if we had some useful stuff on our page, they'd visit it when they're already in their own Facebook accounts. It would be easy to go from one to the other, you know.
OIL: Whatever. Why don't you ask around and see.

We always have a ton of new students in the summer. Some students take courses that will transfer to the 2 and 4-year schools they will go back to in the fall. Others like to get a course or two under their belts before the mad crush of work begins when school starts back in August.

Whatever scenario fits your profile, remember that you need to get a CSTCC photo ID card even if you're going to be here for only a few weeks.

"Why do I need that?" you might ask, unknowingly.

For starters, your photo ID is your library card. Isn't that great! You need only one card, and with that FREE card, you are able to:

Check out up to 10 books at a time

Check out up to 2 DVDs for four days to watch when you need a break

Use textbooks and other materials on reserve to enhance your studies

Check out books on CD to listen to during your commute

Check out current fiction bestsellers to read when you go to the beach

Let your kids check out books for their schools' summer reading lists.

Ride CARTA buses for FREE!!

All you need to do is go to room 216 in the Student Center, smile pretty, and wait about a minute and half for your official photo ID (includes your A#) to pop out of the machine. That's it!

No long lines and waits like you have at Starbucks or the movie theater or Walmart or the DMV. The ID office is open:

Well, here's the library's version:

Once upon a time there was a teeny tiny student who went to a teeny tiny college in a teeny tiny town next to a teeny tiny river. Now, one day this teeny tiny student put up his teeny tiny textbooks to take a teeny tiny break between teeny tiny semesters.

And that teeny tiny student who's taking the teeny tiny break is YOU!

Our break is even tinier than yours because we're changing our hours only slightly for the summer semester.

Starting Wednesday, May 13, you can come to the library all summer long at these times:

Monday-Thursday 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM
Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Saturday and Sunday - CLOSED

Until then, we'll be open 8:00-4:30 May 8, 11, and 12.

So, take your teeny tiny break before the first summer session starts on May 13, and come by to keep us company during the teeny tiny summertime.

Library Offers Extended Hours Sat & Sun, May 2-3

Overheard in the IMC lobby:

Hard-working Student: Drat! I have to work until 3:00 this Saturday, and I was hoping to get to the library that day to study for my finals. I need about 4 hours to finish my part of the project and a PC to use.

Problem-Solving Student: No, problem, man. Didn't you know that the library is open longer this weekend? Saturday they're open 11:00 AM until 7:00 PM; and Sunday they're open from 1:00-7:00. That SGA guy said they were paying the library staff's extra hours out of the SGA budget.

HWS: Cool! That's exactly what I need. You know we have that project due Monday, too. You want to text the group from our business class so we can study together and work on that PowerPoint presentation?

PSS: Yeah, that's a good idea, but we need a couple of awesome computers and a place where we can talk and work so we don't bother everybody else. You have to be quiet in the library, you know.

HWS: Nah, you don't. They've got a group study room we can reserve and it's got two hyper computers in there. It's awesome!

PSS: I'm there. Let's try for 3:30, okay?

HWS: Sure, I can be there by then. Let me go inside and reserve the room, and you let everybody know. If we don't get finished by 7:00 on Saturday, can we come back on Sunday?

PSS: Yeah, didn't I just say that the library's open Sunday from 1:00-7:00? If we don't get it done by then....

HWS: Not to worry, man. With this extra time and a place to work, we're all set. Just bring your brain this time!

Congrats to Aaron, our Outstanding Student Assistant!

Every year departmental awards are given to students who deserve recongnition for exceptional work in academic departments. At the College's recent "Hats off to Excellence" celebration, the library staff bestowed this honor on Aaron Dunn, who has been a stellar library student assistant in the circulation department for two years. That's amazing! It's very likely that you have seen Aaron at the check-out desk, or that he has assisted you with using reserves, checking out books, or answering a wide variety of your questions in person and by phone.

Aaron is majoring in Mechanical Drawing and CAD Technology and hopes to graduate in the next year when he will pursue employment with TVA or VW. He loves music and would like to design musical instruments or equipment and would really enjoy playing drums in a band after he finishes his education.

Aaron's dependability, accuracy, positive attitude, and excellent public service skills are an asset to maintaining our high standards of customer service. Thank you, Aaron, for all your hard work. It is a pleasure to have you around, and we look forward to your coming back next fall.

Want Graphic Novels? Take our Quick Survey

I will have to admit that I have read only a few graphic novels, but I am interested, as many of you are, in reading more of them. You may have seen the movie Watchmen (If you're over 17!) and then decided to read the book. Or maybe you read the book first and couldn't miss the movie. Have you read V for Vendetta or the autobiographical Persepolis? And I can't fail to mention all the Batman, Manga, and now Bat-Manga books, and the amazing Maus, winner of the Pulitzer Prize Special Award! Well, the list could get w-a-a-a-y longer, but I'll stop with those.

Just in case you didn't know, graphic novels are, according to the ALAN Review, "book-length narratives told using a combination of words and sequential art, often presented in comic book style." Several of us on the library staff are considering developing a graphic novels collection, and we need your input. Tell us how you feel about this category of fiction by answering the questions below. I'll post the results of the survey and let you know what our plans are. Just tell us your favorite graphic novel or recommend one that we should buy for our collection. Thanks!

National Library Week: Worlds Connect @Your Library

It seems to me that everybody and everything has a special week. You know, there's cornbread week, pet week, music week, garden week, and the little known National Library Week.  Yep, you heard right!  Did you know that even libraries have their very own week, and this is it: April 12-18, 2009. The theme this year is , "Worlds connect @ your library®." Awesome!

Worlds DO connect at your library, and our library is YOUR library. You already know about most of the connections because you're in here every day connecting with your teachers, your friends, your family, and sometimes even strangers. (Didn't your mama tell you not to talk to strangers?)

The American Library Association is our flagship organization, and they advocate for us, which ulitmately means they advocate for YOU.  We're all about providing services and facilities that people need to enhance their lives in whatever way is beneficial: with education, entertainment, and social interaction.

If you have had a positive experience in this library (or any other), tell us your story. Maybe someone helped you format a document, find a lost flash drive, get 5 professional articles from physical therapy journals, or taught you how to set up your email. Whatever the need, we try to meet it.

Experience the Paintings of Robin Howe

When you come by the library during the month of April, you will experience the delightful paintings of local artist Robin Howe. Robin, known for her carefree and whimsical work, has won both national and international awards, and her work is on display in galleries around the country. In addition to teaching classes in art and English here at Chattanooga State, she is a mother of three who runs a bed and breakfast on Signal Mountain and teaches homeschool students. (Whew! She's a busy lady.) Robin says that she tries to "evoke a positive mode whether it be pensive or reflective, or joyous and ebullient."

Reserve our Large Group Study Room

Demand for collaborative work space by groups of students and faculty has increased, and in order to provide for these requests, the large group study room adjacent to the circulation desk is now dedicated to use by groups only.

If your study group (4 or more) wants a place to work on a project and you need to use computers, we will take your reservation for the large group study room adjacent to the check-out desk. Just sign up for a day and time period on the schedule and the room will be available for your group to use during the time you need it.

The room is equiped with two multi-media PCs that students can use together, a large table for group work, and three upholstered chairs for reading or studying. Group discussion won't bother anyone as the door and walls are nearly soundproof.

if your group does not need to use a computer, we ask that you use one of the other four study rooms, but those rooms are available on a first-come basis. Groups of two or three can use one of the collaboration stations at the north end of the library. Caution to individuals: if a group needs to use a multi-purpose space that you are occupying, we reserve the right to ask you to relinquish that area so that the group will have an appropriate area for their interaction and collaboration.

Hear Author Sybil Baker 3/31, 5:00 PM

We are excited to announce that local author Sybil Baker will be in the library Tuesday evening at 5:00 to read from her debut novel The Life Plan.

"Sybil Baker spent twelve years teaching in South Korea prior to accepting a position as an assistant professor of English at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga after earning her MFA in Writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. During her extensive travels throughout Asia, she became increasingly interested in the allure and alienation of American travelers and expatriates, and this has heavily influenced her writing. Her fiction and essays have appeared in numerous journals, including upstreet, The Bitter Oleander, Paper Street, and Alehouse. Her essay on American expatriate literature appeared in AWP’s The Writer’s Chronicle in September 2005."

Robert Eversz, author of the Nina Zero novels, describes The Life Plan as "...a screwball comedy for the 21st century, a witty and winning romp through one woman's discovery that life, love, and liberty do not always go according to plan. Baker's talent for zinging one-liners and trenchant characterization make The Life Plan a joyously touching read."

Media Equipment Now Available for Check-out

Do you need to enhance your presentation with video? How about customize your PowerPoint slides with photographs of local interest? Maybe submit a YouTube video to CNN's iReporter? You can now do all those things with video equipment that you can check-out from the library.

That's right! We have a video camcorder, a digital camera, and a Flip video camcorder available for check-out to students, faculty, and staff. Any of these pieces of media equipment can be checked out of the library with your CSTCC photo ID card. In addition, there are 3 sets of headphones with microphones attached that can be used in the library with our PCs and Macs or with your laptop.
